Exotic Cars and Dual-Clutch Auto Transmissions
Here at Prestige Imports in North Miami Beach, FL, we see all kinds of vehicles. From popular classic cars to exotic luxury vehicles and everything in between. One trend that’s been common among many newer exotic and luxury vehicles is the installation of a dual-clutch automatic transmissions. Why is that?
Are dual-clutch transmissions better than other transmissions? Let’s take a closer look.

How Dual-Clutch Transmissions Work
A dual-clutch automatic transmission uses two clutches assigned to alternating gears to shift directly from one gear into the next, resulting in faster shifting times. One of the clutches handles odd gears (R, 1st, 3rd, 5th, etc.). The other clutch handles even gears (2nd, 4th, 6th, etc.). The driver simply puts the vehicle in drive and the vehicle does all the rest. Unless manual mode is activated, of course.
Dual-Clutch Transmissions = Higher Performance
A dual-clutch transmission shifts from one gear into another. For example, when you shift out of 1st gear, the transmission goes directly into 2nd. Said another way, shifting out of 1st gear is the same thing as shifting into 2nd; it is one motion. A regular automatic transmission does not do this. When it shifts from 1st to 2nd, it must shift out of 1st gear, go into neutral for a split-second, and then shift into 2nd. While new automatic transmission can shift much more quickly than a human with manual gearbox could, the transmission is still slower and looses more power than a dual-clutch transmission.
