The year so far in the auto world has been all about electric vehicles, and British sports car maker Lotus is in no mood to sit back and watch others make progress in the space. The company has been busy making its first SUV called the 2023 Lotus Eletre. Lotus claims that its aptly named all-electric “Hyper-SUV” will redefine automotive innovation with a pioneering LiDAR system, which promises to offer improved safety and be a massive step toward fully autonomous cars. How does the advanced LiDAR system in the Lotus Eletre work? How will it be helpful to drivers? Keep reading this blog from Prestige Imports in North Miami Becah, FL, to find out.
2023 Lotus Eletre Highlights

The all-new Lotus Eletre boasts a 600-plus horsepower, all-wheel-drive electric motor and comes with a top speed of 160 mph and a 0-60 mph time of a mere 2.9 seconds. Eletre will also be the first global SUV built on the 800V architecture, which should provide it with enough juice to offer an exceptional estimated range of 370 miles and fast charging options. But that’s not what you’re here for, are you?
The upcoming 2023 Lotus Eletre boasts some world-first technology for a production car in the form of a deployable LiDAR system, which makes it the most technically advanced Lotus ever produced. But before we tell you how the advanced LiDAR system in the Lotus Eletre is going to help you. Let’s first understand what LiDAR is all about.

What is LiDAR?
LiDAR stands for “Light Detection and Ranging.” As its name suggests, it is a remote sensing method that uses light in the form of a pulsated laser to measure distances. In other words, LiDAR is a laser-based equivalent of radar that sends numerous laser lights to measure the distance between you and an object.
How does the advanced LiDAR sensor system in the Lotus Eletre work?
LiDAR is a massive part of the Lotus Eletre and autonomous cars. The most significant benefit of LiDAR is that it helps create a 3D map of the world using sensors and cameras, thus helping identify other vehicles, obstacles, and other road features for better navigation and safety. It also helps the car detect oncoming vehicles and obstacles when driving in autonomous mode or makes the other driver assistance features detect more efficiently and help avoid collisions.
What is deployable LiDAR technology?
In the past, LiDAR sensors were huge and bulky and were seen as an unsightly enormous camera-like apparatus typically mounted on the roof of autonomous vehicles. However, the deployable sensors in the Lotus Eletre mounted on top of the windscreen, the top of the rear glass, and the front of the wheel arches are hidden. They go almost flush with the surfaces of the Eletre when not in use, thus ensuring the car’s striking design shines through.
The other benefit of the deployable LiDAR technology in the Lotus Eletre is that it helps Eletre become capable of autonomous driving. In Lotus’s own words, the Eletre “supports end-to-end autonomous driving technology and is future-proofed for further development.” Notably, Eletre will be capable of SAE Level 4 autonomy, where the driver need not pay any attention to the road as the vehicle drives itself in some pre-determined regions.

It will be interesting to see how the 2023 Lotus Eletre and its advanced deployable LiDAR sensor technology work in the real world. Until then, keep reading our blogs for more exciting content like this.
