Few industries advance as quickly as the automotive industry. Performance technology and other powertrain upgrades get the most attention, but that isn’t what we’re talking about today. Being able to drive safely at night was one of the most innovative automotive developments in the last 100 years. In the last 10 years, old halogen lights have given way to more modern light-emitting diodes. Other than being just newer, what are the advantages of LED headlights? There are a lot of reasons why you should be thinking about upgrading their headlights, but we’re going to focus on the three most important ones. How are LED headlights different?
In the old days, headlights were just automotive version of the old school incandescent bulbs. They used a metal filament to absorb enough heat to create light. LEDs are basically an electric circuit that produce light.
Better Nighttime Visibility
The most obvious difference between LEDs and incandescent halogen lightbulbs is the overall amount of light that is produced. On average, the old style of headlights will create about 3,200 lumens, whereas LED units can produce up to 12,000 lumens. The brighter light will cover more of the road, which will not only make it easier to see more of the road, but it will also be easier for other vehicles to see your car coming.
Long Lifecycle
If better visibility is the most obvious and important difference between LEDs and old headlights, the long lifespan of LEDs is a close second. It’s not uncommon to see a car driving around with a burned-out headlight. However, there is also little to no chance that the vehicle is using an LED setup. In fact, it is not out of the realm of possibility that LEDs will outlast a vehicle.
Refined Appearance
It’s not a coincidence that a lot of luxury brands utilize LED headlights as standard equipment. The sharper, more defined headlights are definitely a statement. LED headlights are certainly more refined than old school halogen headlights.
